The Regional Public Library
The Regional Public Library in Krakow (Wojewódzka Biblioteka Publiczna or WBP) is the key institution devoted to books and literary life in the city and its region. The WBP in Krakow collects and archives books, makes the collection available for readers, as well as supervises a network of local public libraries in the Malopolska region. The Library’s inventory includes almost 500,000 items. The WBP runs the Malopolska Digital Library, which comprises almost 80,000 digital volumes. Since 2005, it has coordinated the activities of Book Discussion Clubs for children, teenagers and adults, operating all over the region. The Library’s culture and readership promotion programme is very rich; the WBP organises, for instance, training sessions, workshops, reading soirées, literary contests, exhibitions, bookcrossing events, on its own or in cooperation with other cultural institutions and non-governmental organizations (among others: the Malopolska Region Read Out Loud Competition, the Książka za książkę [A Book for a Book] campaign, the Malopoloska Region Book Days “Książka i Róża” [“A Book and a Rose”]). The Library runs the Bibliopaths Zone, in which participants may freely exchange their books. At the WBP in Krakow, the Malopolska Comic Book Studio (Małopolskie Studio Komiksu) has been operating for three years now, and the Comic Book Festival in Krakow is organised there annually. The Library’s offer is addressed to various target groups and includes both activities for children and teenagers, as well as events held within the frames of senior citizens education programme, S@S ‒ Szkoła @ktywnego Seniora (School for Active Senior Citizens).
Since autumn 2012, Arteteka and the Art Library of the Regional Public Library in Krakow have been operating at the Małopolska Garden of Arts. The resources and services of both institutions are mostly art-oriented.
