Matołek the Billy-Goat

Matołek the Billy-Goat (Koziołek Matołek) – a character created in 1933 by Kornel Makuszyński (text) and Marian Walentynowicz (coloured drawings) in one of the first Polish picture stories for children. The history of Matołek the Billy-Goat is considered to be a pioneering story in Polish comic book industry. The story in the books (of which a whole series was created) describes the journey of the protagonist in search of the mythical town of Pacanów, the only place on Earth where goats can be shoed. His adventures are of course extraordinary and absolutely unbelievable, and the hero is sympathetic and gullible, funny, clumsy and naive. Makuszyński wrote the whole history in the form of quatrains written in rhythmical octameter, and every quatrain is illustrated with one drawing by Walentynowicz. Makuszyński’s texts are directly responsible for introducing multiple fixed phrases, comparisons and other terms in the Polish language. It is worth noting that the images of characters which are commonly known and remembered are only the third version drawn by Walentynowicz – the first two differed considerably from the final version.
