Kornel Filipowicz

(1913–1990) was a poet and a writer of novels and novellas. He spent his youth in Cieszyn, where Julian Przyboś tutored him in poetry. Before the outbreak of World War Two he began studying biology at the Jagiellonian University. He was closely connected to the Krakow avant-garde – Henryk Wiciński, Anatol Stern, Leopold Lewicki, and Józef Jarema. He took part in the September Campaign, and later contributed to the partisan struggle. He was arrested, and sent to the Gross-Rosen and Sachsenhausen camps. After the war he returned to Krakow. He worked with Stanisław and Tadeusz Różewicz. In the 1980s, he published in the underground NaGłos and Zapis magazines. He co-founded Pismo magazine. For many years he had a relationship with Wislawa Szymborska.
