I open the window: it's a June day, there are lights
gleaming on the river they call the Vistula. There are bridges,
towers with domes green as trees, there are trees
like green towers, there are blue trams full of people,
of their voices. There are all the voices there can be, there is
everything there can ever be, and only this is
truth: don't hope for more, don't ask,
it's time to grow up, to be like a child
on the threshold of a mystery

Bronisław Maj

(born 1953 in Łodź) – poet, writer, critic, editor and publisher. Lives in Krakow; lecturer of contemporary literature at the Jagiellonian University. Published 11 books of poetry. His poetry, translated into 20 languages, has been published in many countries of the world. Laureate  of the Kościelski Award in 1984, PEN Club Award for poetry in 1995, and the Cultural Award of underground “Solidarity” in 1983 and 1984.
