Michalik's Burrow

Michalik's Burrow

45 Floriańska Street

Established in 1895 by Apolinary Jan Michalik, the café got its name because the favourite artists’ hang-out in the former Lwów Confiserie had no windows. The popular literary cabaret Zielony Balonik [the Little Green Balloon] was founded here in 1905, with contributors including Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński, Edward Leszczyński and Karol Frycz. Stanisław Przybyszewski, Lucjan Rydel, Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer and Stanisław Wyspiański frequented the cabaret during the Young Poland era, as did Józefa (Pepa) Singer – the daughter of an innkeeper from Bronowice and model for the character Rachela in Wyspiański’s The Wedding.
