Ryszard Kapuściński

(1932-2007) – journalist, author of reportages, writer. He debuted at the age of 17 in ”Dziś i Jutro” weekly. In 1955 graduated from the University of Warsaw, the Faculty of History. A year later he received a Gold Cross of Merit for his reportage To też jest prawda o Nowej Hucie, in which he described the life of workers who built the steelworks. From 1962 he worked for the Polish Press Agency as a regular correspondent to Africa, Latin America and Asia. Author if several dozen collections of reportages (e.g. Cesarz, Wojna futbolowa, Heban, Podróże z Herodotem), which have been translated into almost all world languages (next to Stanisław Lem he is the most often translated Polish writer). Award winner of many prizes and distinctions in the ranking of ”Press” monthly. Doctor honoris causa of Silesian, Wrocław, Jagiellonian, and Gdańsk universities; a member of the Association of Polish Writers.
