Stefan Żeromski

(1864-1925) – prose writer, publicist, playwright, first President of Polish PEN Club. Author of novels: Przedwiośnie, Ludzie bezdomni and Syzyfowe prace. He was often called “the literary conscience of the nation” – he wrote about poverty and social injustice. What does Żeromski has in common with Nowa Huta? Not much, but communist authorities used his visions of a better, modern, progressive world, and first of all the vision of “glass houses’ from Przedwiośnie, and a fragment from Nawracanie Judasza (the first part of the trilogy Walka z szatanem). A street and a hospital bear the name of Żeromski in Nowa Huta, one of housing estates has been named Szklane Domy (Glass Houses) after his novel.
