Kanonicza Street

In 1903, the Czech author Jaroslav Hašek served three months for vagrancy in the city jail that used to be located here. This “residency” inspired his short story Among Vagrants. Some researchers argue that Kraków’s small-time swindler Władysław Dudzielski, detained at the same time, was the inspiration for Josef Švejk, one of the most famous characters in modern European literature.
